The Kidney Cars Program is a community service/fundraising endeavor, helping Connecticut residents get rid of used and unwanted vehicles. The funds raised support the National Kidney Foundation's efforts to prevent, treat and cure kidney and urinary tract diseases.
Donate your Car FAQs
The vehicle does not have to be operational or registered, but it must be whole, and you must have a clear title to it.
We do accept cars with out-of-state titles with some restrictions.
When applicable, a duplicate title must be obtained by the donor from the DMV. State law requires titles on vehicles newer than 1970.
Operational donated vehicles are auctioned to licensed dealers, or sold as parts or a scrap metal to licensed dealers. We never sell to private citizens, so you can be assured your donation is liable-free upon transfer of title to the licensed dealer.
You do not have to determine the fair market value of your car for the tax deduction. The requirement to substantiate the value of the donation rests solely with the donor. Various market sources (Kelly Blue Book, personal tax bills, etc.) are used as guides to determine fair market value, taking into consideration condition, mileage, etc. The IRS defines "fair market value" as the price at which the car would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller where both parties have reasonable knowledge of relevant facts.
Based on national figures, the National Kidney Foundation receives, on average, 72% of the proceeds from a car donation! The proceeds from your car donation go to provide programs and services to more than 2,500 dialysis patients, hundreds of transplant patients, and others in various stages of kidney and urological disease in Connecticut. Proceeds are also used to fund professional and public education, as well as research.
